When Thomas Van Buskirk opened the first Mountain Mike's next to Stanford University in 1978, he started a California tradition. The Palo Alto original won over college students with fresh dough rolled daily, real whole milk mozzarella, and vegetables sliced every morning. Current owners Chris Britt and Ed St. Gemeāboth Stanford alumsāhave led the chain to #6 rankings on Yelp's Top Pizza Brands and Newsweek's 2025 Best Pizza Chains. San Diego now has five locations, including this Clairemont spot where families gather around big screen TVs, kids hit arcade games, and lunch crowds enjoy the all-you-can-eat pizza and salad bar.
