A Brooklyn Pizzeria
About
When Lou and Diane Chiappe opened New York Pizza & Italian Deli in 1974 at 2358 University Avenue, they planted San Diego's first authentic New York-style pizzeria—a bold claim that fifty years of operation has validated. In 1995, they brought that East Coast soul downtown to 401 C Street, where it still stands on the corner of 4th, unchanged while the Gaslamp around it went posh. The wood-fired oven cranks all day, turning out those classic thin-crust pies: hand-tossed dough made with high-gluten flour, fermented overnight for proper chew, stretched thin, topped simply, fired fast. $3.25 gets you a massive slice. Twenty bucks covers a whole pie. Meatball pizza with ricotta and the classic Margherita disappear quickest, while homemade cannoli and New York cheesecake handle dessert duty. A few tables inside, window bar seating, and an umbrella-shaded outdoor setup create the quintessential corner pizzeria vibe. Fast, friendly, unpretentious. Two blocks from Civic Theater, it's been feeding downtown San Diego since the Padres played at Jack Murphy Stadium. Brooklyn never left.
