Civico 1845
About
Brothers Dario and Pietro Gallo traveled from Cosenza in Italy's Calabria region to San Diego in September 2013, fell in love with the city, and opened Civico 1845 in Little Italy in June 2015 with a bold vision: bring the most authentic and contemporary Italian experienceâfood, service, wine, cocktailsâto America, including the USA's first full Italian vegan menu. Chef Pietro, who follows a vegan diet himself, crafted house-made vegan cheeses and meats alongside traditional Southern Italian dishes. The gamble paid off spectacularly: Gambero Rosso (Italy's Michelin equivalent) awarded Two Gamberi in 2022; VegNews named it America's Best Vegan-Friendly Restaurant in 2024; the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs designated the Gallos official ambassadors of Italian cuisine. The elegant dining room features reclaimed materials and natural elements reflecting their sustainability philosophy; the cozy sidewalk patio anchors Little Italy. Homemade pasta daily: gnocchi with buffalo burrata and pesto; seafood risotto; traditional lasagna with Beyond Meat ragĂš. Heirloom burrata caprese. Fried zucchini blossoms. Italian wines, Aperol Spritz, craft cocktails. Happy hour $8 wine/$9 spritzes. Contemporary Calabrian cuisine honoring southern Italian rootsâwhat's being served in Italy today.
