Volare Italian Restaurant
About
The Sanfilippo family arrived from Sicily in 1969, and in 1978, brothers Alfio and Onofrio opened Volare on Barnett Avenue, working together with family members for 20 years to establish one of the area's best for authentic Italian cuisine. When the brothers moved back to Sicily in 1997, their sister Anna Sanfilippo took over, and since then her daughter Antonella Pascucci and fellow family members have kept Volare successfully family-owned and operated for nearly five decades. "We don't pretend to be something we're not," Pascucci laughs, explaining the Old School philosophy. "People don't go here because they want a five-star dining experience." They go for home-cooked Italian favoritesālasagna, eggplant parmigiana, chicken marsala, linguine pescatore with clamsāserved in generous portions at affordable prices. The atmosphere feels like dining with long-lost Italian relatives: cozy, a bit dark but clean, relaxed and casual, warmth and family-friendliness. Giant 28" take-out pizzas. Minestrone soup $1.60. Fried calamari $6.50. Antipasto salad $6.50. Beer and wine. Packed every night. A neighborhood favorite in Midtown and Midway on Nextdoor. Classic Italian dishes, large portions, no pretensionsājust welcoming smiles and good food.
