Caffè Calabria
About
Arne Holt started with an espresso cart at Grossmont Hospital in 1991. By 2001, he'd opened North Park's Caffè Calabria, and the combination shouldn't work—but it does. Seven consecutive years of espresso awards meet membership in the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana, the organization that certifies authentic Neapolitan pizza makers worldwide. Behind glass windows, a two-story roaster processes beans from Central and South America while a custom wood-fired oven churns out certified pies made with San Marzano tomatoes grown in volcanic soil near Mount Vesuvius. Holt has visited Italy over 25 times, importing everything from cups to spoons from his beloved Amalfi Coast. Wednesday's all-day happy hour ($12 pizzas, $6 Aperol spritzes) fills both the sidewalk patio and upstairs terrace with locals who figured out what Holt knew decades ago.
