Four friendsāJohn Freis, Charlie Muirhead, Kelly Bowie, and Angela Montionāopened Pizza Nova in Point Loma in 1990, combining over 150 years of collective restaurant experience into one waterfront pizzeria overlooking San Diego Bay. Hand-stretched dough baked in wood-burning ovens turned into gourmet creations: Thai peanut-ginger sauce with scallions and roasted peanuts, portobello with black truffle oil and crispy pancetta, even pear and gorgonzola with spinach salad on Alfredo sauce. TripAdvisor awarded it Travelers' Choice for consistently ranking in the top 10%. The casual, modern atmosphere centers on the exhibition kitchen where flames lick the dough, while complimentary garlic rollsātheir signature moveāarrive at every table. Patio seating with heat lamps offers bay views and boat docks. Happy hour runs 3-5pm weekdays with $9 mini pizzas and $2 off drafts, wine, and wells. Four locations across Southern California now, but Point Loma started it all.
