Sammy's Woodfired Pizza & Grill
About
When Sami Ladeki opened Sammy's on Pearl Street in 1989, he became the first restaurateur to bring a wood-fired oven to San Diego—a $300,000 gamble for a man who'd arrived from Beirut with just $200 in his pocket. That bet paid off spectacularly. Today, the La Jolla flagship still cooks pizzas at 800 degrees using only oak wood, creating that signature crust: crispy outside, soft inside. Ladeki's journey from Munich's culinary schools to Caesars Palace shaped his approach—quality ingredients, proprietary dough techniques, and thin-crust pies that honor California's creative spirit. The dog-friendly patio with its fire pit and string lights captures the original vision: sophisticated yet welcoming, innovative yet rooted in tradition.
