URBN North Park
About
Jon Mangini brought his New Haven, Connecticut background to California when he opened the first URBN in Vista in 2008, three years after launching the award-winning BASIC Urban Kitchen + Bar. The North Park location arrived in 2010, claiming a 5,000-square-foot warehouse at 31st and University with that signature mix of wood, metal, concrete, and industrial fixtures. By the time Pizza Today ranked URBN No. 14 on their Hot 100 Independent Pizzerias list with $10.5 million in gross sales, the concept had expanded to four San Diego locations. The coal-fired oven runs at 600 degrees, creating that mild char on thin-crust, New Haven-style pies served rectangular on half-sheet trays—chewy inside with a slight crunch outside. The Mashed Potato & Bacon pizza became legendary; Fresh Clam and Gouda Garlic Alfredo show the creative range. Coal-fired wings tossed in rosemary, garlic, Thai chili, lemon, and parmesan for $15; crispy Brussels sprouts with bacon, balsamic, and gorgonzola for $13; meatballs in Sunday sauce with ricotta and toasted baguette. The extensive craft beer selection includes a partnership with Pure Brewing's 20-tap North Park location, plus fresh cocktails and premium wine in an airy, industrial space.
